Meet Gayletha

Act 3!  My life has always been about music and the visual arts. Early on, I became hooked on the magic of wheel thrown pottery.  But I focused on a career in music and became a singer, then teacher and mentor, working in some world class companies; Houston Grand Opera, the Metropolitan Opera and Santa Fe Opera.

My clay experience has developed through classes, workshops, observations, conversations and practice. Throughout it all, music has been at the center and now I see that reflected in my ceramic work.  It’s pure joy to work in my own studio, creating new pieces while actively listening from an eclectic library of music.

Defining ones own work is challenging.  I create functional art, approaching each piece with purpose and possibilities. It’s my passion for clay and that tactile feeling while throwing that influences my choices.  I consider my style to be lyrical - influenced by my life in music and my instrument, the human voice. Color and surface are the notes and the rhythm in creating pots that sing!
